Community Outreach

Hartfel has a history of connecting with audiences who would not otherwise have the opportunity or the inclination to attend live dance performances. Performances in retirement communities, movement workshops for disabled children, and performance demonstrations at children’s centers have all met with delighted responses and requests for return performances.

Hartfel’s outreach programs for the disabled will be co-sponsored by cities and local communities.

The Foundation will cooperate with community agencies and their existing programs and facilities. The aim is to help liberate others from the confines under which they live.

Specifically, our programs will include the following workshops:
For the Deaf/Hearing-Impaired:
Dance and movement classes employ vibration stimulus to allow participants to feel the music through vibrations in the air and the floor. The ethodology will be employed, including techniques to promote body awareness, sensitivity to rhythm, and the classical art of ballet. A strong emphasis will be placed on exercises utilizing rhythm and meter in a physical way, versus simply experiencing them through the sense of hearing.

For the Blind:
Dance and movement classes employ spatial exercises to develop the confidence to move through space freely, thus alleviating anxiety or fears. Students will be challenged to move without boundaries or fear, learning how to utilize space for freedom of expression. The classes will employ Hartfel methodologies concerning body awareness and the art of ballet. The teachers will communicate the visual aspect of movement through descriptive speech, and also through the aid of assistants who will guide the students through the physical process until they feel liberated enough to experiment on their own.

For the Wheelchair-Bound:
Dance and movement classes are structured around the act of manipulating a wheelchair to emulate dance movements. The syllabus will include partnering, duets, quartets, and a complexity of choreographic movement that facilitates freedom of expression. All activities would of course take the special needs of the participants into account while challenging their boundaries and physical limitations.

Performance Workshops:
All participants will be invited to perform what they have learned in their classes. Dances will be choreographed specifically for each class, at all times promoting and requiring a high standard of execution and artistry. These dance pieces will be performed in community college theaters, civic centers, and our own in-house heater.
